Justin Mckenzie

Justin was born in London to Caribbean parents with roots in Trinidad and Grenada. Creativity was at the heart of the McKenzie household. Music, art, and creative expression were always encouraged and nurtured.

He began learning instruments at a very young age—starting at just four years old—and developed a broad appreciation for music. Art also remained a constant interest throughout his life, even when his education and early career initially took him in a different direction.

After working for several years in social care and education, Justin decided to change course and pursue a creative career. He began working as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. Around that time, in 2000, he co-founded the hip-hop label and events platform Uprock Recordings together with a group of DJ friends.

From this collaboration, Jazz re:freshed naturally emerged in 2003—a creative movement centered around music, art, and cultural expression.

As co-founder and Creative Director of Jazz re:freshed, Justin is responsible for shaping the platform’s creative vision while also serving as co-director. His work allows him to bring together his passions for art, music, and creation in a way that is both meaningful and impactful.
